Mega Man

Platform Played On: NES

ABOUT

Mega Man is a game about a Robot humanoid called, well, Mega Man (Or rock man if you prefer Japanese titles). In this game you go out of your way to defeat the 6 Robot Masters, gain their power to defeat Dr. Wily to save the world.

STORY

So, When you're playing this game the story really isn't there much other than you're megaman and you gotta go defeat the Robot Masters. However, The Manual gives the first part of the story talking about how at one point Dr. Wily was an assistant to Dr.Wright (Dr.Light). They both helped to make a near humanoid Robot named "Megaman". However, after this Dr. Wily had a change of heart and proceeded to become evil and want to take over the world. He took most of the robots except for Megaman and repurposed them to be evil. So it's up to Megaman to go out and save the world and to defeat Dr. Wily. The story as you can see is very simple here, it's nothing complex but I know that these games become harder with time.

GAMEPLAY

Megaman for it's time was quite solid on the controls, With the movement in particular it feels like there's a bit of a delay when it comes to accelerating towards a certain direction, But with tapping a direction you can see Megaman slightly move is foot to that direction, Which can be a nice thing but it was deemed useless. However, This game is BRUTAL and I played it with no rewinds or save states. The level design and the picky platforming segments can be just brutal. Like for an example the stages that has these moving platforms on a rail where it dips down, If you don't reach it on time you will fall to your death. The enemies in this game? Where do I even begin? They LOVE to put a cluster fuck of enemies in certain places, Like I'm thinking about Dr Wily's fortress 2 where there's these green scrubbing bubble dudes coming after you and they act like sharks. If you don't get them in time, you will never be able to make the first jump. There's also some actual good enemies in my opinion like the ones going back and fourth that kinda looks like that fireball kirby enemy from Kirby's Adventure. And of course, How can I not talk about the bosses? So, There ARE fun bosses in my opinion I think bosses like Cutsman and Bombman are both really fun bosses, But then you have absolute fucking bullshittery bosses like GODDAMN GUTSMAN. Holy shit, The fact that HE'S THE LAST BOSS OF THE ROBOT MASTERS GAUNTLET YOU TAKE BEFORE WILY IS SO BULLSHIT. Worse? His weakness is the bombs you get from Bombman which takes a moment to explode. Oh my god just, There's bullshit levels like Iceman which the main boss of that isn't hard it's actually the stage that I hate alongside Bombman's Stage. Again, Megaman plays fine for what it is the controls feel tight and the ability to change your abilities is really great, It's just everything else kinda fucks you over. Fortunately, The continue system is generous and that it refills all your energy tanks for each weapon and that you can restart the stage entirely again, I don't think I would have completed this game if Dr. Wily's Fortress stages made me restart from the beginning all over again.

MUSIC

I think the Music is fine in this game, It can get annoying when you're having to replay a boss over and over again but I think the music here can be good to okay. I can't really say what is my favorite track of the bunch because of how much I have to listen to it over and over after each death.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Mega Man was indeed a start to a series and to many others this game is the hardest game in the series (some people may say some other games but this game really takes the cake). I don't really HATE this game, But I don't think I will never play it again after beating it unless I wanna go after some of the achievements on Retro Achievements if I feel like it. I can see how games like I wanna be the guy or I wanna be the boshy takes heavy inspiration from the Megaman games. If anything else it's equally Frustrating and Fun at the same time but it's much more for the hardcore crowd of gamers, But even there there's just poor level design, enemy placement, and boss design that really makes it hard to recommend.
